July 21st Recap & Application of Pastor Kevyn’s Sermon Notes: “The Spirit Helps Us Understand Jesus”
Applying the Sermon Notes to Our Daily Walk with Jesus
1. God's Spirit "in us" helps us understand Jesus.
John 14:16-26 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Paraclete, so that He may be with you forever; 17 the Paraclete is the Spirit of truth, … He remains with you and will be in you…. 26 But the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.
Action to Consider: The Holy Spirit, referred to as the Paraclete, is our divine teacher who reveals the truth about Jesus. Each day, seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit through prayer and meditation on God's Word. Allow the Spirit to remind you of Jesus' teachings and apply them in your daily decisions and interactions.
John 15:26-27 26 When the Paraclete comes, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, 27 and you are testifying as well, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
Action to Consider: Recognize that the Holy Spirit testifies about Jesus, and you, as a follower of Christ, are also called to testify. Share your faith and experiences of Jesus' love and truth with others, trusting that the Holy Spirit will give you the words and wisdom needed.
John 16:13-15 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.
Action to Consider: Depend on the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truth. Spend time in God's presence, listening to the Spirit's voice and direction. Let the Spirit glorify Jesus in your life by revealing His truth and guiding your steps.
2. Jesus is the only person we can completely trust to teach us about God and what we need to live forever.
John 3:10-13 10 Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man."
Action to Consider: Trust Jesus as your ultimate teacher about God and eternal life. When you face confusion or doubt, turn to Jesus' teachings in the Bible. He provides the true understanding of God's work in the world and how to live in alignment with God's will.
John 3:14-18 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Action to Consider: Believe in Jesus' sacrifice and God's love. Reflect on the depth of God's love and commitment to your eternal existence. Let this truth shape your life, leading you to love others and share the message of salvation.
3. Jesus taught that the greatest problem in life for people is loving the things of this world too much.
John 3:19-21 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.
Action to Consider: Examine your life for areas where you might love worldly things more than God. Jesus is the light in a dark world, and by following Him, you can avoid the pitfalls of worldly attachments. Prioritize spiritual growth, service to others, and living according to God's truth.
Points to Reflect:
Jesus' devotion to healing and serving others should inspire you to be compassionate and helpful.
His promises and commitments remind you to rely on His faithfulness.
His encouragement to know God as a Father should deepen your relationship with God.
Application Summary: God's Spirit within you informs life-giving choices. Here’s how you can apply this:
Growth in Understanding: The Holy Spirit promotes your growth in understanding life through Jesus' perspective. Study the Scriptures, pray for insight, and be open to The Holy Spirit's teaching.
Awareness of Worldly Justifications: The Holy Spirit makes you more aware of how people justify their love for the world. Reflect on your actions and motivations, ensuring they align with God's will.
Managing Life for the Good of Others: The Holy Spirit develops your mind to manage life for the benefit of others. Seek to serve and uplift those around you, embodying Jesus' love and compassion.
Need for "Living Water" and the "Living Word":
You need the Holy Spirit to be transformed from within (John 4:10-14; 7:37-39).
The "Living Word" planted in you bears good fruit (Mat. 13:3-23; Mark 4:3-20; Luke 8:4-15).
Jesus, the Living Word, is your source of eternal life (Mat. 4:4; Luke 4:4; John 6:51).
Jesus' words abiding in you lead to bearing fruit (John 15:1-8).
The Holy Spirit abiding in you helps you grow in understanding the truth that sets you free (John 8:31-32; 14:6, 17, 16-26; 15:26-27; 16:13-15; 17:17; 18:37-38; 20:22).
**Infuse these truths into your daily walk with Jesus, allowing The Holy Spirit to guide, teach, and transform you.
